EDM is mainly to use the electrical corrosion phenomenon when the pulse spark discharge is generated between the tool and the workpiece to remove excess metal to achieve the size, shape and surface quality specified by the technical requirements of the part.
1.The mold EDM processing method must meet three major conditions:
① A certain gap must be maintained between the tool electrode and the workpiece surface to be processed, so it must have an automatic feed and adjustment device for the tool electrode in EDM;
② Spark discharge must be instantaneous pulse discharge, for this reason, pulse power must be used for EDM;
③ Spark discharge must be performed in a liquid medium with certain insulation properties.
2. Factors affecting the erosion rate of EDM: electrical regulations, polarity effects, thermal constants of metal materials, working fluid, and chip removal conditions.
3. Factors affecting the accuracy of EDM processing: various errors of the machine tool itself, tool electrode manufacturing accuracy, workpiece and electrode positioning and installation errors, the size and consistency of the discharge gap, the loss of the workpiece electrode and its processing stability.
4. Electrode material requirements for EDM: small loss, stable processing, high productivity, good machining performance, and low price. Common materials: copper, graphite, cast iron, steel, brass, same tungsten alloy, silver tungsten alloy. Structure: ①Integral electrode ②Mosaic electrode ③Combined electrode.
5. The method of machining the cavity mold by EDM: ① single-electrode translation method ② multi-electrode replacement method ③ decomposition electrode method.
