No wonder billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk often say its just a matter of time until humans colonize Mars. It’s pretty fascinating! Most of these products are designed with a process called injection molding. If you are reading this, you probably have something made with injection molding in your hand - just look at it. Its parts are used mostly for automotive, electronics, medical equipment helps everyone but those are all potentially manufactured through the process of plastic injection molding as we do at Swords Precision. In this article we are going to explore how injection moulding works and its importance.
Injection molding is a process where melted materials are placed in molds which allows different parts to be created. A mold is a specific form that the plastic gets put in. So how does all this go down? We have small plastic pieces known as pellets and we pour them into a large vessel called a hopper. We then heat the pellets, making them extremely hot which causes them to melt into a dense liquid. When the plastic is melted, we introduce it into the mold. Eventually, the liquid plastic cools and sets in the shape of the mold. Sounds pretty simple but trust me this works like charm!
The neatest bit in injection molding is capable of making elements with a high variation in shape and size. With molds we can pretty much make anything from a simple shape to intricate designs. Say, we want to manufacture a toy which resembles a dinosaur. Injection molding allows us to produce parts in multi colours and textures too. This is also why you can see so many vivid toys in shops, because they are made with various molds and colored plastics!
An additional benefit of injection molding is that we produce highly repeatable and consistent precision parts. We have computers to aid in the design phase of the molds. These computers ensure that multiple molds are created for you, ensuring each part looks exactly like the last. Especially when it comes to medical devices, this is something really important. For example, so-called tools to assist doctors or patients should all be made in the same way for the sake of safety and efficacy.
Since injection molding not only allows us to make precise parts but also gives us control with regards to the amount of plastic we inject for each part, it is a preferred method for making automotive components. It saves money while promoting the use of less plastic. We can also blend other materials with the cleaver plastic to enhance its strength and rigidity. That provides a longer-lasting and more durable finished product — which is critical in the case of toys and tools.
However, there are many advantages of injection molding. It able to produce high complexity and precision parts at a low cost in short amount of time. It is, again, a very efficient method as it actually cuts down on waste and does not really need that crazy amount of additional work to be done to the part. Well, there are some pros; but there are issues to consider too. The molds could cost a lot, and it needs to be precisely designed for example. The mold has to be just right, or the plastic might not flow properly and errors will appear in the actual output parts.
To sum it up, injection molding is a really crucial process and its impact is evident in the majority of products that we come across on a daily basis. Swords Precision uses injection molding to produce parts for vehicles, electronics and medical equipment. We can quickly get much more complex and exact with parts and saves us money as well material.
